    A process model recognising prior learning of informal sector motor mechanics

    The informal sector serves as a reservoir of skilled unqualified individuals who learned and practice the motor mechanic trade outside the formal sector. This article reports on a process model for recognition of prior learning of informal sector motor mechanics and to integrate them into the formal sector training and ultimately employment. Formal sector motor mechanic training does not acknowledge non-formal learning of the informal sector.The process model identifies specific entry points into the formal sector training.The study was exploratory in nature with a qualitative research design applied. Semi-structured interviews through a purposive snowball sample technique were used. The data were analysed utilising the ATLAS.ti 7.0 program. The findings conceptualises a process model, backed by a process of gap training, to recognise the prior learning of the informal sector motor mechanic. This research could engage SETAs in the funding of training of informal practising motor mechanic

    The utilisation of a career conversation framework based on Schein’s career anchors model

    Orientation: This  study  constituted  and  reported  on  the  outcomes  of  a  structured  career conversation  framework  based  on  Schein’s  eight  career  anchors  in  an  open  distance  and e-learning (ODeL) university in South Africa. Research purpose: The purpose of the research was to report on the utilisation of a structured career conversation framework based on Schein’s career anchors model. Motivation for the study: The rationale for the study was the paucity of studies investigating career anchors in South Africa’s multicultural organisational context. Research design, approach and method: A quantitative approach was adopted in the study. The population consisted of 4200 employees at a university in South Africa. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) as well as a Scheffe post hoc test. Main  findings: The  findings  of  this  study  suggest  that  career  conversation  has  a  dynamic nature (i.e. it changes) over a period of time. Consequently, career development interventions in the workplace need to approach the workforce holistically. Practical/managerial implications: The findings and results will assist managers, practitioners and  career  development  specialists  in  the  practical  implementation  of  the  career  anchor concept. Contribution/value-add: The career conversation framework based on Schein’s career anchors has expanded the existing theory to find the right balance between career conversations and career anchors to keep people motivated to perform optimally in an organisation

    Filament identification and dominance of Eikelboom Type 0092 in activated sludge from wastewater treatment facilities in Cape Town, South Africa

    Routine characterisation of activated sludge and identification of the filamentous population by microscopic and/or other non-culture dependent techniques can assist in diagnosing the aetiology of poor performance of wastewater treatment works (WWTWs). In South Africa, most facilities rely solely on physicochemical indicators, treating reactors as ‘black-boxes’, with the result that process adjustments are often delayed, to the detriment of the environment. This study was performed in order to gain insight into the filamentous population found in activated sludge in Cape Town WWTWs, to compare these with other global and local literature findings, and to build capacity in this science. Physicochemical and plant performance parameters, in terms of nutrient removal and settling, were obtained from routine operational data and assessed in conjunction with the microscopic analyses of activated sludge samples taken over a 6-month period. Hypotheses on the links between filament types and/or plant  configurations and/or operational parameters were formulated using  existing literature. In order of prevalence, the five most common dominant filament species in 96 activated sludge samples were: Eikelboom Type  0092, Eikelboom Type 1851, nocardioforms, Microthrix parvicella and  Eikelboom Type 021N. In order to compile a statistically significant  database, it is recommended that an extensive nationwide study is  conducted to link filament types with plant configurations, operational parameters and geographical locations.Keywords: activated sludge, bulking, identification, filament, Type 009

    A Comparative Analysis of Human Trafficking: The United States of America (USA) and the Republic of South Africa (RSA)

    Human trafficking is a serious global problem that transcends international borders and disciplinary boundaries. It presents a conglomeration of problems generally dealt with by public health, criminal justice, social service and immigration agencies. Victim advocates state that millions are victimized each year. The data suggest that law enforcement agencies perceive human trafficking to be of greater, or equal, concern for the myriad of social institutions and participants affected by human trafficking than for law enforcement, itself. Policy recommendations are to refocus the law enforcement response - which may include various approaches that can simultaneously benefit public health - by incorporating an Epidemiological Criminology framework to help to guide the development of more systematic and integrative insight into the world of human trafficking

    Catalytic conversion of alkynes to α-vinyl sulfides mediated by carbene-linker-carbene (CXC) rhodium and iridium complexes

    The catalytic activity of a set of mono- and bimetallic Rh(I) and Ir(I) complexes bearing carbene-linker-carbene (CXC) bis-triazolylidene ligands (with X = O, N) coordinated in a bridging or chelating fashion was evaluated in the hydrothiolation of alkynes. The hydrothiolation of 1-hexyne with thiophenol in the absence of an external base or other additives was selected as a model reaction. All rhodium complexes are highly selective catalysts towards Markovnikov product formation and display superior activity compared to the related iridium derivatives. DFT calculations were carried out to rationalize the reaction mechanism and selectivity of this process. Neutral dinuclear [Rh2Cl2(cod)2(μ-COC)] was found to be the most effective catalyst for this transformation. Its applicability was further studied towards the hydrothiolation of different alkyl and aryl alkynes using predominantly aryl thiols and proved to be one of the most active and selective catalysts towards the α-vinyl sulfide product to date

    The title complex, [Re2(C27H25N2O2)H(CO)8]·0.67C4H8O, was formed as a product in the reaction of a rhenium(I)–Fischer carbene complex with a free NHC carbene. The coordination environment about the two Re atoms is slightly distorted octahedral, including a bridging H atom. The imidazolium and furan groups are almost coplanar, whereas the mesityl substituents show an almost perpendicular arrangement with respect to both heterocyclic units. Mol­ecules of the complex pack in such a way as to form channels parallel with the bc unit-cell face diagonal running through the unit face diagonal. These channels are partially occupied by tetra­hydro­furan solvent mol­ecules
